Vatican Splendors To Go On Display In Ft. Lauderdale

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - A visual journey into spirituality and the evolution of the Catholic Church will go on display this weekend at the Museum or Art in Ft. Lauderdale.

Vatican Splendors: A Journey through Faith and Art is one of the largest collections of art and historically significant object from the Vatican to ever be put on display in America.

Beginning with Saint Peter, the exhibit places special emphasis on art and objects which reflect significant events and periods relating to Christianity.

The exhibition includes more than 200 objects, many of which have never been on public view. Paintings by artists such as Giotto and Il Guercino, sculpture by Baroque master Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and unique objects including jewels, intricately embroidered silk vestments and uniforms of the Papal Swiss Guard. Also on display will be an elaborately decorated gold and silver reliquary containing bone fragments of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

"They are in offices and archives or in libraries so even people who go to Rome will not get to see them on display at the Vatican Museum," said Monsignor Roberto Zagnoli, Curator of the Vatican Museum.

A highlight of the exhibition is a small stone Pietà, a relief carved by Michelangelo late in his career, of a grieving Madonna. This exhibit is accompanied by documents and personal objects belonging to the Renaissance master.

"The exhibition becomes the outreach effort and how fitting is it that John Paul II is the one who is reaching out to every last visitor who is going out of the exhibition," said Irvin Lippman, Executive Director of the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale.

Vatican Splendors will be on display at the museum through April 24. Tickets are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors and $13 for children.

Fort Lauderdale is one of only three U.S. cities to host Vatican Splendors.
