POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) – A woman was killed early Friday morning when she was hit by a train as she crossed the the tracks on Dixie Highway in Pompano Beach. Investigators are trying to figure out what she was doing there.

The accident happened just after 5 a.m. Friday in the 800 block of Dixie Highway. The train was using the Florida East Coast Railway tracks which parallel the street when the engine struck the woman. The train stopped, blocking a number of crossings in the Pompano Beach area while BSO investigates.

BSO spokesperson Veda Coleman Wright said the dead woman was an adult, but could provide no other information.

Investigators are asking people to avoid railroad crossings in the area for the morning commute, as the train will be blocking many of them until the investigation is complete and the train is allowed to move.
