Davie Home Destroyed By Fire

DAVIE (CBS4) --Two elderly Davie residents are safe Saturday night, but their home is destroyed.

Their mobile home at 1249 SW 115th Ave. is the victim of a grease fire that started Saturday afternoon. Homeowners Larry Klein and Faith Macnow, were inside when it went up in flames.

"I was cooking with oil, I got distracted, I went to the other side of the house," said Klein. "It took about two or three minutes and the oil caught fire."

It was just an accident, but the small grease fire sparked a massive blaze. Klein and Macnow's entire lives were in the home, and they have no insurance.

The couple lost everything.

"I tried to use an emergency fire extinguisher I had in the kitchen, but it wasn't strong enough to put the fire out," Klein said.

It was too late.

A neighbor, Terry Dachton, sprung into action.

"I came around front. The elderly couple was out. The wife wanted to go back in. With the help of my neighbor Kenny and I, we kept her away from the house and brought her to the ambulance," Dachton said.

"Nobody got hurt, we both got out, the only thing is, I lost my little dog," said a tearful Klein.

"I started calling for the dog but the flames were too intense. It was a Chihuahua, and unfortunately, the dog's name was Lucky," Dachton said.

"It's a sad thing during the holidays for this sort of thing to happen to a couple, to anyone, and my heart goes out to them," said Braulio Rosa Davie Fire-Rescue spokesman.

The Red Cross is helping the couple. But if you'd like to help, call CBS4's Neighbors 4 Neighbors at 305-597-4404.
