Fishing Reports Nov. 20th, 2010

Capt Alan Sherman - Miami-Dade

The Beat Goes On!

Fishing in South Florida is hot and the weather is cool! How about that! Half way into November and water temperatures are in the 70's. From one week to the next air temperatures have been as high as 85 and as low as 60. Not Bad! This is prime fishing conditions. Dozens of fish species are available right now in our protected inshore waters and offshore waters! Pick a location and there is a great chance that you will have an unbelievable fishing adventure.

In North Biscayne Bay loads of baitfish continues to school in the channels and over the grass flats. One cast of my 10 foot Lee Fisher cast net is all it takes on some days to fill the Get Em's two large live wells with frisky pilchards, sardines and threadfin herring. A few mullet schools continue to hang out in the bay and large schools of black mullet are still migrating along the beaches. Small jack crevalles, large bluerunners, large Spanish mackerel, cero mackerel and small king mackerel along with bluefish, ladyfish and barracudas are feeding on the baitfish schools. No matter what the weather is each day there is somewhere we have caught a lot of fish in the Bay. A few tarpon and an occasional snook have hit some of our baits but this week we landed non. Live bait fishermen are having a ball and if you like throwing artificial lures this is the time to be fishing.

Offshore waters have had a lot of mackerel and big bluerunners feeding on live baits and artificial lures just outside the beach. When the seas are down and I have been able to fish off the beaches we have had mackerel to six pounds and lost fish way over six pounds. Further offshore when winds have allowed me to get out to the reef kingfish, bonitos, blackfin tuna, a few nice dolphins and sailfish are available.

South Biscayne Bay at times has been alive with fish. Small to medium sized mutton snappers, red, gag and black groupers, mangrove snappers, bluerunners, jack crevalles, porgies and Spanish mackerel all have been caught by my clients this past week while fishing live baits on the surface and on the bottom have been hitting.

I have not fished in Flamingo for a few weeks now. Not because I haven't wanted to but because I have not had anyone want to travel to the Park. Instead wanting to take advantage of what is happening closer to home. From reports that I have been getting Florida Bay has been producing nice catches of redfish in the channels along with a few snook, plenty of sea trout and of course the ladyfish and jacks that are everywhere. Outside of the Parks boundaries plenty of hungry Spanish mackerel, bluefish and a few cobias are being caught and free floating tripletail have been caught this week up to 14 pounds. Along the coast besides the snook, redfish and a few tarpon there have been blackdrum, grouper and snappers being caught.

Recent Catches:

I fished with my family offshore one day and caught kingfish to 18.5 pounds, blackfin tuna, Spanish mackerel to six pounds and mutton and yellowtail snappers fishing free lined live baits and then the next day we fished the bay and caught 12 Spanish mackerel before looking for something else and that something else was jacks to eight pounds and lots of mutton snappers and groupers.

Next up was Jordan D and his father Norman and son Adam. It was a stormy day and we had to call it early but still managed a great catch in the Bay. The guys caught a bunch of Spanish mackerel and big bluerunners on live baits and Rapala X Raps.

Next up was David L and his sons Alan and Ryan. We fished in Biscayne Bay and the guys had their hands full with all the mackerel and big bluerunners they could handle. All the action came from live pilchards fished under a Cajun Thunder float or live pilchards fished free lined on light tackle.

Jeff and Scott are up next for a full day in the Bay. We filled the live wells and fished our way to South Bay and back. The guys had bent fishing rods almost the whole day. Between the two they caught dozens of Spanish mackerel to six pounds, big bluerunners and at least 20 mutton snappers to 20 inches and 20 groupers to 20 inches and had a few shots at snook as well. The action came on live baits hooked top Mustad 1/0 long shank hooks and Rapala X Raps. Scott landed three mangrove snappers to 1.5 pounds on two pound line and a few Spanish mackerel but lost the groupers that might have been a world record.

Last up is Jerry C and Jerald M. We started in North Biscayne bay and fished all the way to South bay and back. Loaded the live wells with bait and caught three kinds of mackerel on live baits and artificial lures. Fished offshore or a awhile but it was bit sloppy so we moved back in the Bay where we caught mutton snappers, red and black groupers and more mackerel, jacks and bluerunners before calling it a day.

Marathon Florida Keys Fishing Report - Captain Chris Johnson, SeaSquared Charters - November 14, 2010

David Barr and his wife, Joy, visit their vacation home in Islamorada about this time each year and David always gets in a day of fishing with his friends Dora Potash and Bassi Kristmanns. Let me tell you, this trio of excellent anglers keeps me on my feet and laughing all day! It's a pleasure to have them on the boat.
This year, we hit a few spots in Hawk Channel and commenced to bending some rods. The crew caught 5 mutton snapper to about 8 pounds, 10 large mangrove snapper up to 19 inches and 6 yellowtail snapper in the 15-inch class. They also released numerous just-short grouper. Rounding out the catch were 5 Spanish mackerel that are headed for the smoker.

This group really loves fishing, but I think they value the time spent together even more. They were so pleased with their day that Bassi ordered 3 lobster art framed pictures of them back at the dock with their catch.

The rods we used were made by Key Largo Rods. The reels were all Daiwa Advantages. The line was made by a company called FINS. The bait was caught with a West Coast 3/8 inch 10 foot net and the Get Em is 2005 Pathfinder 22' XL Tournament Edition Bay Boat powered by a 2010 Yamaha SHO 250 four stroke outboard engine. The Hooks are all Mustad hooks, the float are made by Precision Tackle and are called Cajun Thunders and the artificial lures are made by Rapala, Gulp and Hookup lures.
