Haiti's Presidential Candidates Visit Miami

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Hoping to raise funds and support, some of Haiti's presidential candidates are in Miami meeting with Haitian-American leaders.

While many in Miami's Haitian-American community will not be able to vote in the November 28th elections, their financial support is critical for the candidates' campaigns. Many of the candidates have also made stops in the large Haitian communities of Boston and New York to campaign and raise funds.

There are 19 candidates are on the ballot in Haiti's presidential election and all were invited to participate in a forum Sunday at Florida International University; eight of the candidates have confirmed that they will take part. Last month only five of the candidates showed up at a similar forum in St. Petersburg.

Haitian political observers say the debates organized in the U.S. are something new as Haitian-Americans seek a larger role in the rebuilding of their homeland.
