Best Local Songwriters In Miami

The eclectic Miami music scene bubbles with songwriters of many cultures and musical genres. They craft hip hop, R&B, Reggae, rock and dance music that is subtly and overtly influenced by Caribbean and Latin sounds. Here is a sampling of some of the best local songwriters in Miami. -- Derek Reveron

Jose Ferrer performs as Boxwood, an introspective singer-songwriter who crafts profound lyrics and lingering melodies. He plays several instruments and lays tracks in his home recording studio. You can hear hints of several musical genres in Boxwood's songs, which explore a range of human emotions. During performances around Miami, Boxwood improvises ditties on stage while playing a guitar and manipulating loop pedals.

Honor Roll Music is a songwriting collective, record label and recording studio based in Miami's Little Haiti community. Founders Nick Scapa and J. Reade Fasse head a talented collective of composers and musicians who do it all. They write songs for musical performers and television shows, such as HBO's Entourage. They've also scored a few movies, including "Cocaine Cowboys II," and created hooks for several television commercials.

Vocalist Cuci and keyboardist Smurphio comprise the duo known as Afrobeta. Together, they are among the best local songwriters in Miami. They fashion eminently danceable pop-funk replete with throbbing bass lines and lyrics in English and Spanish. They are a favorite of the Miami Beach dance club crowd, and they perform across the U.S. and abroad. Popular titles include "Play House" and "Do You Party?" Their remixes are the bomb.

Singer-songwriter Jim Camacho is a longtime Miami favorite who performs at local venues with acoustic guitar. His albums, including "Stalker Songs" and "Beachfront Defeat," showcase haunting alternative rock songs with emotionally intelligent lyrics. Camacho has performed at Radio City Music Hall and toured with Alicia Keys and John Legend. A multi-talented musician, Camacho wrote and scored songs for a local production of Hamlet.
