Grieving Mother Speaks Out After Only Son Gunned Down In SW Miami-Dade

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A grieving mother is speaking out after a confrontation led to a deadly shooting in Southwest Miami-Dade on Sunday after that claimed the life of her only son.

Miami-Dade police said around 5:30 p.m. they received a ShotSpotter alert in the 10600 block of SW 170th Street.

When officers arrived, they found a 32-year-old Edwin Molina who had been shot. He was taken to Jackson South Trauma Center where he died.

Molina's mother Linda Taylor said she was stunned when she received word that he had died.

"I would like to get some answers. I would like to know what happened. I would like to know what provoked the situation," she told CBS4's Peter D'Oench. "He was such a good kid. We heard about this when someone came knocking at our door at three in the morning and that is when I heard the news. I just can't believe he is not here anymore. I know there was some type of argument and that led to the shooting, that is all I know. That is all I have been able to find out."

"My son had a dream about going to Texas," she added. "He texted me a picture of a house he was looking at. He wanted to move and go be with his Dad. Now that is not going to happen."

Taylor said she didn't understand how this could happen and why her son was involved.

"He was a hard-working kid. He wasn't bad. He never had any problems with the police. No drugs, nothing like that. He was a locksmith and he was working," she said.

A 26-year-old man accused of shooting Molina with a shotgun was detained for questioning.

"We're trying to figure out exactly what happened in this altercation and why a firearm was presented and obviously fired," said Miami-Dade police spokesman Luis Sierra.

So far he has not been charged in the shooting.

"It's just crazy what's going on with all this violence. He was only 32. He was just 32-years-old and now he was gone and for what," questioned Taylor. "I want to know about the guy who did this. Why did he do this? Why? Why would you want to get a gun to shoot someone like that."

After questioning, the 26-year-old was taken to a local hospital for an involuntary medical evaluation

Initial reports indicated that the shooting may have involved a home intruder, that was still under investigation according to the police.
