Made Of 400-Year-Old Cedar, Touring Totem Pole Makes For Unique Ceremony In Palmetto Bay

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A totem pole, carved from a 400-year-old cedar, made a South Florida stop Monday at Deering Estate in Palmetto Bay.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava was at the blessing of the pole event and spoke about the totem pole's message and how this can be tied to her upcoming trip to the nation's capital.

"We need peace in our land and we're at a time of upheaval, violence is on the increase, sadly. I'm grateful that President Biden has seen the importance of bringing people together and I've been invited to a meeting at the White House on Wednesday with other city leaders to talk about a national strategy to end this upsurge in violence," she said.

The totem pole, which is touring the country, will eventually make its way to Washington D.C., where it will be displayed at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.
