'I Just Want To Know My Sister Is OK': Family, Police Concerned About Missing Mother Of Wandering Toddler
MIRAMAR (CBSMiami) – Detectives are now investigating and searching for Leila Cavett, who could be the mother of a toddler who was found wandering all alone, wearing only a T-shirt and diaper, outside of a Miramar apartment complex on Sunday.
The Miramar Police Department believes she is in danger and they are concerned for her safety.
Cavett's sisters traveled overnight from Jasper, Alabama to Miramar to speak with detectives on Tuesday morning.
"I just want to know my sister is OK," said Gina Lewis. Lewis told CBS4 the little boy found on Sunday in Miramar is Cavett's 2-year-old son, Kamdyn.
Lewis also said Cavett lives in Dawsonville, Georgia and her family is unsure why Cavett would be in South Florida.
"We don't know of her having any friends or any family out here to be out here in the first place," Lewis said. "We're not really sure what's going on."
Lewis added it is out of character for her sister to be without her son.
"He is very pleasant, he is very friendly," said Ebony Williams who found the toddler outside an apartment complex near Pembroke Road and SW 68th Avenue on Sunday morning.
As of Tuesday morning, Miramar Police had not officially confirmed Cavett's relation to the toddler. Police said the boy is currently in the care of a foster parent.
"I asked him where is your mommy and he kind of just pointed everywhere. I reached out my hand for him. He grabbed my hand and I just walked around the complex hoping that I would find someone looking for him," said Williams on Monday.
Family members told CBS4 they have attempted to contact Cavett on her cell phone, but after several rings, no one picks up. The woman's grandmother was the final person to have any communication with her through a Facebook message on July 26, according to family members. They said Cavett had no plans to come to Florida.
Cavett's family said they are remaining positive as the search for her continues. Police have not confirmed if they believe foul play is involved.
The family told CBS4 that Cavett is single and does not have a relationship with her son's father.
"Everyone is concerned, we just want you home," said Lewis.
