Pedestrian Struck, Killed In Pompano Beach

POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) - A pedestrian was struck and killed early Wednesday morning in Pompano Beach.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said an adult male was hit at around 5:30 a.m. near the 1200 block of East Copans Road.

Here is what BSO said happened:

"A Honda Civic was heading westbound in the center lane approaching the 1100 block when the driver attempted to swerve into the left lane to avoid striking a pedestrian who was crossing Copans Road. The passenger side of the Honda struck the man, causing him to fall and come to a rest across the center lane. The driver of the Honda failed to remain on scene and fled westbound.

Another westbound vehicle, a Toyota Camry, was unable to come to a stop in time and struck the victim as he lay prone on the roadway. The driver remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Investigators determined the victim was not in a designated pedestrian crosswalk when he attempted to cross the road. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue pronounced the man deceased on scene.

Investigators are searching for a metallic gray, 2014 or 2015-model, 4-door Honda Civic. Detectives say the vehicle is missing the passenger's side mirror and possibly sustained damage to the passenger's side front door and fender."

Anyone with information is asked to contact BSO at 954-321-4231 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
