Two People Shot, Including 5-Year-Old Child, In Lauderhill

LAUDERHILL (CBSMiami) – Lauderhill Police say an altercation between two men at an apartment complex led to gunfire and left a man and a young boy injured.

The incident occurred at the Lauderhill Point apartments on Northwest 19th Street around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Police say two men had an altercation that led to gunfire, which caused a 30-year-old man and a 5-year-old child to be struck.

"They encountered an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound and a 5-year-old child suffering from a gunshot wound as well," said Lt. Michael Santiago.

Crime scene investigators poured over the hallway where the shots were fired for clues, snapping photos into the night.

Police say the both the man and the boy were responsive when police and rescuers arrived. They were rushed to the hospital in serious condition.

We're told they are not related but have extended family in common. As for what led to the violence, it's unclear, according to police.

Calvinette Lemons said she's a family member of the victims.

"It's just a sad day right now," said Lemons. "It was a heart rending scene. Seeing a wound open with blood that was like scary and heartbreaking."

She said the two men involved in the altercation knew each other.

"They say the shooter came back and they were trying to stop it," she said. "It looked like they were gonna fight but the next thing you know he pulled out a gun and shot between them."

Police do not believe the 5-year-old was the intended target and it's not known how many shots were fired or how many times the victims were struck.

What we do know is that an altercation apparently caught a child in the crossfire.

"That could have been anybody child," Lemons said. "That could have been my child."
