BSO Investigates Deputy-Involved Shooting In Tamarac

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Tamarac on Thursday evening.

BSO said deputies responded to a call of a woman being shot at around 7 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 5800 block of Northwest 57 Court.

Police said a "female victim and male suspect" had been transported to a local hospital.

A video shows the tense moments as a man stood on the stairs outside the apartment complex as witnesses say the man put a gun to his head, then waved the gun around.

Seconds later, he pointed the gun at Broward Sheriff's deputies.

BSO Sheriff Gregory Tony said deputies were forced to fire on the man when he pointed a gun at them.

A short time later, cellphone video captured the man being wheeled away on a stretcher.

Tony said the man refused to let them get into the apartment where he had shot a woman.

"He shot someone inside the house," Tony said.

"He took it upon himself to stand on the landing and stop our deputies from going in there and safeguarding or treating this individual. Only after 20 plus minutes of trying to get this thing to deescalate, he elected to point the weapon in a hostile manner at our deputies so they did an outstanding job."

The sheriff said it appears the man and woman are going to survive.
