MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A grieving Miami family is pleading for help to find a hit and run driver

61-year-old Mercedes Sarmiento died after being struck in the middle of Southwest 8th Street and 44th Avenue around 830 p.m. on Monday.

"She was the rock of our family. If you needed something she would give it to you," said family member Ophelia Rojas.

The driver of the eastbound car that hit Sarmiento stopped, but told police a westbound driver caused the accident.

That driver kept going and Miami police are calling the accident a hit and run.

"Please come forward. Our family is destroyed. We are in pain," said Rojas.

Sarmiento was a mother and grandmother.

Her family says she was known as mom to dozens of children she helped to care for.

Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
