MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- CNN has decided to postpone Florida's Senate debate between Gov. Rick Scott and Sen. Bill Nelson.

"Due to the devastating effects of a href="https://cbsloc.al/2CEt8IM" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Hurricane Michael in Florida, CNN, in agreement with both campaigns, is postponing the Florida Senate debate. A date and time for the rescheduled date will be announced soon," read a statement released by CNN Thursday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, Rick Scott asked for a two-week delay so he can focus on response and recovery from Hurricane Michael.

The debate was originally scheduled Oct. 16.

Scott cited "catastrophic destruction caused by Hurricane Michael," and said he's certain Nelson agrees the response should be a priority.

He said, "We appreciate CNN understanding the dire situation in North Florida," and added, that Scott "will have no time for campaigning in the next few weeks as he focuses exclusively on recovery efforts for the foreseeable future."
