Worker Trapped Under Construction Debris Thankful To Be Alive

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Just a few hours after being trapped underneath a trash chute that fell on a dumpster, a 25-year-old worker walked out of Ryder Trauma Center thankful he's able to go home with his family.

"I'm very happy. I came to see my family today, what Jesus do for me," said Yeury Santana. "Thank you, Jesus, for everything."

Chopper 4 was over the scene during the rescue operation at an apartment building on the 3300 block of Virginia Street in Miami.

"They were doing some roof work on top of the building at the time," said City of Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll.

According to City of Miami Fire Rescue, for some reason, Santana was inside a dumpster when a trash chute, scaffold, and part of a wall at the top of the eight-story building came crashing down.

"When he saw it start to come down, he ducked down into the dumpster and prayed that this equipment and this debris would not hit him," said Carroll.

Santana became trapped by the trash chute but was eventually pulled out by members of the City of Miami Technical Rescue Team, with assistance from a crane being used at a construction site next door.

Santana was able to walk himself to the stretcher before being transported to the hospital as a precaution.

"I got hit here and my head but everything is OK, thank God," said Santana.

The City of Miami Building Department and OSHA have been called out to investigate the incident.
