MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Police are investigating the death of a child who fell to his death from an apartment building in Aventura Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened at around 3 p.m. at the Echo apartments in the 3200 block of Northeast 188th Street.

The 8-year-old boy was flown to Joe DiMaggio's Children's Hospital but did not make it, according to police.

According to police, the boy fell from the 12th floor of the building, which is actually the roof of the condo.

"One of our school resource officers assigned to the charter elementary right across the street minutes later began CPR, as well as other arriving officers on the scene," said Aventura police officer Chris Goranitis.

Images from CBS4 News Chopper4 showed police investigators outside of the building and on its roof.

It's unknown how or why the child was on the roof.

The luxury condo has 18 private penthouse terraces.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
