HOMESTEAD (CBSMiami) – The Florida Forestry Service is fighting a brush fire in Homestead.

The flames threatened mobile homes at the Gateway Estates Park Condo community earlier Sunday afternoon.

Public information officer Scott Peterich says the fire had charred 40 acres of land and is 40% contained.

At this time, he says, no homes are threatened and no evacuations have been ordered.

They are, however, recommending that residents stay indoors tonight.

"There's not gonna be flames but with this community is going to be smoked in this evening," said Peterich. "If we continue with an east wind the smoke is going to settle. Anybody with any health issues it's not going to be a pleasant evening."

Residents called the fire department at 4 a.m. when they saw the fire creeping closer to the property line.

"I'm concerned," said homeowner Daryl Brooks. "This is a mobile home. If it catches on fire it will literally only take a minute or less to burn."

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue has been structure protection putting water on the homes closest to the fires.

"The firemen was putting some water to avoid the fire from continuing," said resident Armando Moran.

The Florida Forestry Service pulled its fire crews back to get some rest.

They are planning to be out here again with more sophisticated equipment for cleanup.
