MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Miami Police are trying to find out what happened to a person found dead in an apartment complex.

Police filled the hallway at the community called 'Serenity on the River,' located at 1740 NW North River Drive Thursday morning.

Officers say they responded to the building after the woman's mother called them and said she had not heard from her daughter in several days.

"We smelled a foul odor. Officers went into one of the apartments and realized the person was deceased," Miami Police Department spokesperson Kenia Fallat said.

When they entered, they found a badly decomposed body. They could not tell whether it was a man or a woman.

Investigators have not said if this is a homicide but there are a lot of questions on what led to her death. They are trying to determine how long the woman's body was inside the unit.

Investigators are focusing on the apartment where the body was found and where neighbors say a small dog was also discovered and later taken for a walk away from the scene.

Neighbors expressed their concern during the investigation.

"Oh my God. That's the first time I heard something about that in this building. I've lived here for almost nine years...nothing like this," said neighbor Guilherme Bravo.

"No idea what's going on. I just came here this morning and I saw two police cars outside and just no idea," said another neighbor Christian Chiquito.

He has lived in the building for nearly four years and was stunned to hear that a body had been discovered in one of the apartments.

"I have never heard of something of this magnitude," said Chiquito.

While police have not said if this was a homicide, Chiquito is nervous.

"Kind of unsafe...Need to step up my security, need to make some new living arrangements to see if a better apartment has more security in their area because I don't want to be unsafe in my home relaxing and all of a sudden feel threatened and someone pops through my front door," said Chiquito.

The Medical Examiner's Officer was called out to the scene, working well into the evening.

Miami Police detectives are working the case but if anyone knows anything, please call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471- TIPS.
