American Express Boosts Paid Leave For New Parents

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- American Express is the latest company to announce it's expanding its maternity and paternity leave.

The credit card giant announced on Monday that it would be widening its parental leave program to now offer paid maternal or paternal leave for up to 20 weeks, up from 6 weeks. Mothers who give birth and need additional medical leave will also be able to take another six to eight weeks before returning to work.

The new policy, which starts on January 1, will also pay up to 35,000 thousand dollars for infertility treatments, surrogacy and adoptions.

The program will be open to all U.S.-based employees, part-time or full-time, who have worked at the company for at least a year.

AmEx is just the latest corporation to increase its family benefits.

Ikea recently announced that it would be expanding its parental leave to four months for all workers starting January 1.

Netflix already offers up to a year of parental leave to new parents. Adobe Systems allows 16 weeks parental leave for the primary caregiver, Hilton Hotels offers two weeks for all parents and new mothers who give birth get an extra eight weeks, yogurt maker Chobani gives six weeks for all parents and Etsy Inc., offers 26 paid weeks off for all new parents.
