SWEETWATER (CBSMiami) -- Investigators are trying to determine what led to the murder of a FIU student in the parking garage of an apartment building in Sweetwater.

It happened Friday around 10:30 p.m. at the 4th Street Commons building at 10899 S.W. 4th Street.

The victim, Michael Zaldua, is believed to be in his early 20's.

Witnesses said they heard 2 or 3 gunshots before noticing police swarm the building where FIU students are known to reside. The complex, however, is not affiliated with the school.

"It doesn't worry me one bit. I'm from New York, stuff happens," said one resident at the scene to make sure his car wasn't damaged. "In this crazy world we live in, ya know what? Unfortunately, it's horrible to hear, but if it can happen in a place like this, it can happen anywhere."

Both Miami-Dade Police and Sweetwater Police are working closely with each other in the investigation.

"The Sweetwater Police Department ensures that our community is safe and that this is an isolated incident," said Sweetwater Police Chief Placido Diaz.

FIU informed students Saturday morning.

"We are saddened to learn that Michael Zaldua was an FIU student. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends. The university will be offering support to students who feel impacted by this tragedy. Although there is nothing to indicate there is any danger to our FIU community, this incident serves as a reminder to be vigilant of your surrounding and report any unusual activity to police," said Dianne Fernandez, Broadcast Media Manager.
