MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Thanksgiving is just three days away and although many of us know where we'll be celebrating the holiday, others are not so fortunate and don't even know if they'll have a Thanksgiving meal.

Thankfully, turkey giveaways are being offered at several places around South Florida including Phillis Wheatley Elementary School in Overtown where members of the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club handed out Thanksgiving holiday meals with all of the fixings.

A total of 75 families from five inner city elementary schools are getting the full deal.

"This is our way of contributing back to the community," said Nellie Hernandez from the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club. " This helps families that aren't going to be able to take advantage of the free lunch as kids are out of school for the week, help them with their Thanksgiving meal and a little extra."

And they're getting it all; a 10 to 12 pound turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberries and of course, dessert.

"What I'm looking forward to the most is the pumpkin pie, yes. Yes!" exclaimed Little Haiti resident Nadia Garcon.

But there's more here than the typical Thanksgiving meal.

"Spaghetti," said Hernandez. "Plus we have tuna, peanut butter, rice; things to give these children a healthy meal during that week."

The event, put on by the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club, is sponsored in part by Publix and Pinecrest Bakery.

The recipients walk in, pick up an empty Publix bag and basically go on a shopping spree to fill up their grocery bags. Although they're excited about the Thanksgiving meal, many here are remembering what the holiday is all about.

"I'm most thankful for having my family, and my friends, and education and a home to sleep, a roof to sleep under," said 10-year-old Joshua Robinson. "I'm thankful for those things the most."

Each family received about $50.00 worth of groceries.

The Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club has been involved in various Thanksgiving Day projects over the years, but this is the first time in the club's 66-year history that they are doing a Thanksgiving Day meal giveaway like this one.
