NORTH MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A 7-year-old boy is fighting for his life and his grandparents are in despair after a terrible accident on busy NW 119th Street on Friday afternoon.

Chopper4 captured some dramatic images of the scene as an inconsolable grandfather was seen walking around in despair and had to be restrained.

Police said the boy broke free from the grandfather's grasp and darted into traffic and was struck.

North Miami police officer and spokesperson Brigette Pace told CBS4's Peter D'Oench that it was 1:55 p.m. when the boy and his grandparents were crossing NW 119th Street at 13th Avenue.

"They were crossing the street and the child was holding the grandfather's hand," said Pace. "He darted out and ran into the street and was struck by a vehicle that was going westbound on NW 119th Street. He was transported to a local hospital where he is in critical but stable condition."

The boy's grandparents rushed to the hospital.

Police said the driver of a black Volkswagen that struck the child stayed on the scene.

Investigators said it was unclear what sort of injuries the child has and he has not been identified.

Pace said it did not appear that charges or a citation would be filed.

"Right now this appears to be a horrible accident," said Pace. "This does show you have to have a good hold of anyone's hand as you are crossing a busy street like this."

Police may have more to say after interviewing the driver in this accident.

While charges are not anticipated, anyone who witnessed the accident is encouraged to call North Miami police.
