Safety Alert: Trick-Or-Treat Safely To Avoid Scary Situations

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is warning parents and trick-or-treaters to stay on guard this Halloween.
"Kids love that magic of Halloween but for mom and dad there's that fine line of Halloween fun and safety concerns," said Erika Benitez with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Keep an eye out for foot traffic and what your kids are doing.
"About 70 percent of deaths or injury to those aged 5 to 9 occur when children ran across the street. This is true during Halloween," said Benitez. "We ask that you always hold small children by the hand and talk to your kids prior to leaving your house."
As for the costume, be aware of your garbs. If possible, try to add reflective tape to your costume so those driving in the dark can see you better.

Also, avoid covering your face or wearing anything that would be considered a threat.
"When possible, try to avoid wearing masks. Instead, you should wear non-toxic makeup," said Benitez. "Don't wear anything that looks like or resembles a weapon, a sword, a gun."
As for trick-or-treating, try to stay in a group.
"Always try to trick-or-treat in groups, in well-lit areas," said Benitez.
For those who trick-or-treat by themselves, avoid rides from people you do not know. Post trick-or-treating, take a look at the candy.
"Make sure adults always inspect the kids' candy before they eat it," said Benitez.
