HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) -- A gunman is in custody after authorities said he was randomly opening fire at cars along a Hollywood street.

Hollywood Police were on scene within minutes of receiving an active shooter call Saturday, at 10:13 a.m., near the 6400 block of Garfield Street.

One witness said the gunman was seen carrying a pack of beer when he put it down on the ground, pulled out a gun and began firing at cars from behind a tree.

"We heard a couple gunshots go off," said Jack Bermudez, who lives a few houses away. "It was a guy, he was like running with a gun shooting at people. We saw some guy running, he was like 'run, run, run!'"

Gunfire struck a red pickup truck, causing it to crash head-on into a tree.

"The suspect did shoot at one, possibly two, of these cars," said Hollywood Police Spokeswoman Miranda Grossman.

Bystander Nigel Wright saw the whole thing unfold and tried to help.

"I don't know if he shot the guy in the red truck, or he was shooting at the guy in the red truck, but shortly thereafter, the guy crashed into the tree," said Wright. "And he was really bad, and we just jumped on the car, me and another gentleman in a white shirt just jumped on the car. 'Cause we had to wait a few minutes to make sure he wasn't gonna shoot us. And then once we saw that he had ran, we pretty much just jumped on the car to try to get the guy out. But we weren't successful."

That man was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in serious condition. Officials did not make it clear whether he was shot or hurt from the crash.

Witnesses said the shooter then fled into his own home, although police could not confirm that, either. The suspect barricaded himself inside, while authorities set up a perimeter around the area.

He was taken into custody a short while later.

No one else was hurt.
