FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - A robbery attempt turned deadly in Plantation when the intended victim turned the tables on his two attackers.

Plantation police said the shooting happened Tuesday night at Plantation Multi-Cultural Park located at 460 NW 43rd Avenue around 9:30 p.m.

"I just heard three gunshots, pop, pop, pop, but I didn't get out my house," said Sadie Willis who lives in the area.

Three neighbors were sitting in the park talking when two men tried to rob them. One of the men, who has a concealed weapon permit, pulled his gun and shot, and killed, one of the armed would-be robbers. The second would-be robber ran off into the surrounding neighborhood and managed to elude police.

"I heard five gunshots, three, then a couple seconds in between and then two more," said Chet Rockwood.

Charles Holmes was in the shower and thought he heard something strange. His family definitely heard something.

"They said they heard some shots out here, I don't know exactly how many but it was some shots," said Holmes who went to the park to see if he could find out what had happened.

In a neighborhood where neighbors greet each other by name and look out for one another's homes, this park concerns some of them. It's fine in the daytime, by night it's pitch black.

"This little park right here, no. This right here no. Too much idle people sit in this park all the time. You know in the night time it's scary," said Sadie Willis.

The man who shot his attacker stayed on the scene after shooting and is cooperating with authorities. The identity of the deceased is being withheld until relatives can be notified.
