Hurricane Shelters Open In Dade, Broward, Palm Beach

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- With Hurricane Matthew nearing Florida's east coast, shelters remain open to accept anyone who would prefer to spend it in a designated hurricane shelter.

For Miami-Dade County residents planning on going to a shelter, the following locations are open:

  • Michael M. Krop Senior
    1410 NE 215 Street
    North Miami-Dade, 33179
  • Booker T. Washington Senior
    1200 NW 6 Ave.
    City of Miami, 33136
  • Robert Morgan Senior
    18180 SW 122 Avenue
    Miami, 33177

The shelters listed above do not allow pets. Pet owners may take their pets to the following pet-friendly shelter:

  • Darwin Fuchs Pavilion
    10901 SW 24th St.
    Miami, FL 33165

As for Broward County, the general population shelters that anybody can go to are the following:

  • Rock Island Elementary/
    Arthur Ashe Middle School

  • Everglades High School

Pets are not allowed in those general population shelters but for those wanting to go to a pet-friendly shelter, you can call the Humane  Society of Broward to register for the following shelter:

  • Millennium Middle School
    5803 NW 94th Ave.
    Tamarac, FL 33321

As of Thursday morning, all special needs shelters for adults and children were closed and not accepting anyone else. For more information call (954) 713- 3100 or call 311.

A pet-friendly shelter is located at West Boynton Recreation Center, 6000 Northtree Blvd., Lake Worth.
