MIAMI (CBSMiami) – While Mathew makes its way through Haiti, in Miami Gardens the Man Dodo Humanitarian Foundation is getting ready for what comes after the storm.
“We’ve learned from the past that it doesn’t really make sense to wait until the hurricane actually hits land to start galvanizing everyone and activating all our different networks,” explained volunteer Sandy Dorsainvil.
They’re focus is on health.
The organization provides medicine, medical supplies along with doctors and nurses.
They’re working with the Haitian American Nurses Association, the Haitian-American Doctors Association and volunteer nursing students from Miami-Dade College.
They had planned to go on a mission trip in December, until Matthew cropped up.
“Let’s just move that mission up and bring in some other key players in the community to bring in additional supplies and to bring in more bodies to start collecting funds as well as supplies,” explained Jeff Lozama. “The information is not getting to people fast enough for them to get prepared, to evacuate, for them to get to higher ground.”
Lozama, president of the Man Dodo Humanitarian Foundation, was just in Haiti and says many had no idea Matthew was headed their way.
“I was in the deep south on Saturday where the first thing I noticed is that people were not even informed about this hurricane coming through. Needless to say, that they are even remotely prepared for what’s going to happen,” he said.
He knows his organizations help will be desperately needed.
“Haiti is not ready for it. In the south of all places is not ready for even a thunderstorm mind you a Category 4 hurricane.” Lozama said.
The group is looking for pain relievers, antibiotic pills and ointment, wound care supplies, pedialite, baby formula and gently worn clothes. If you’d like to help you can call 305-912-1757 or you can drop off donations at 3333 NW 168th Street in Miami Gardens.
