MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – If you're craving a warm and tasty sandwich, whether it's for lunch or a late night snack, Miami Beach's newest hidden gem "Halves and Wholes" may have what you need.
It's a modern take on a classic sub shop - the newest sandwich concept - located on Alton Road and 16th Street.
"These are classic American sandwiches with a Miami twist," said Chef Bernard Matz. "We've had all of our breads custom made so you can order a whole or just get half."
There are 12 signatures sandwiches to choose from or you can make your own. A whole sandwich is a measured 12 inches.
"Like a fun, over the top, great sandwich shop that you can also get salads and soups or desserts. We've got great ice cream sandwiches…that corner spot that you can come on down and pick it up or call us up and get it delivered," said Matz.
The vibe is fun and fast but the quality is top-notch.
"We roast all of our meats in house. We don't have a slicer so everything is hand-carved. You can pretty much get whatever sandwich you like," said Matz
One option is their biggest seller, the homemade meatloaf that's been wrapped in bacon – called the Frito Loaf.
It's a twist on a meatball sandwich. It's a chorizo meatloaf sandwich with melted cheddar cheese and crunchy potato sticks on top.
"There's a Latino kick to it. I definitely taste some flavors and spices that are inside of it and then there's the bacon, there's the crunch with the salad and then the meatloaf is so tender and delicious," said CBS4's Lisa Petrillo after trying it. "It is not for the person who wants a light bite. This is a hearty sandwich."
Next up was Petrillo's request – the tuna half.
"It has the arugula and the tomato. Look at the softness of the bread," said Petrillo.
Finally, you can even get a whole or half salad like their classic cobb with bacon, tomato, blue cheese, perfectly ripe avocado and that pulled roasted chicken.
"This has that slow roast. This has that moisture and then there's a crunch with the bacon that fits perfectly with the perfectly ripe avocado. I'm a happy camper," said Petrillo.
Havlves and Wholes is open five days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 a.m.
