MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Today's Lauren's List is all about helping you "turn that frown, upside down."

There's enough sad news in the world, so let's talk about ways to be happy.

Psychologists say there are certain habits happy people have that keep them smiling.

Here are just a few:

  1. Write down 3 things you're grateful for: Keeping a list of things you're thankful for is a great way to put a smile on your face. A recent study from UC Davis found people who kept a gratitude journal reported feeling more optimistic and satisfied than those who wrote down the things that stressed them out.  Keep that list in a visible place and reference it anytime you need a little pick-me-up.
  1. Listen to sad songs: This sounds counterintuitive, but experts say it works. One study found listening to sad music created "positive emotional effects", because listeners were better able to regulate negative emotions and mood. Listening to something really sad will remind you just how good you have it!
  1. Set realistic goals: This one is for all the list-makers out there, myself included. When you set your goals for the day, week, or life in general, make sure they are specific and achievable. Setting a goal of "saving the environment" is just setting yourself up for disappointment. Instead, set a goal of "recycling more", and you'll feel more satisfied when you actually complete that task.
  1. Forgive: Holding a grudge is bad for your happiness because it keeps negative emotions bottled up inside you, which can eventually lead to resentment and revenge, thus blocking out happiness. Plus, decades of research shows forgiveness is linked to better heart health, less psychological stress, improved physical ability and a longer life!

And here's a bonus tip for you: Smile! While a fake smile won't cut it, flashing a genuine grin is proven to boost your mood.
