PEMBROKE PINES (CBSMiami) -- Vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine hit South Florida Saturday morning speaking to local mayors and elected officials about small business and America's economy.

The meeting, which was closed to the public, took place at the Southwest Focal Point Senior Center at 301 N.W. 103rd Avenue in Pembroke Pines.

Kaine toured small businesses in Tallahassee the night before and hosted events discussing running mate Hillary Clinton's plan to "create an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top."

"Small businesses, including 2.1 million in Florida, continue to be the primary generator of new jobs in America, and Clinton's plan would support them at every step of their life cycle," the campaign said in a statement to the media.

Kaine has been promoting Clinton's plan to help small businesses throughout the country, telling audiences the proposals would simplify and cut small business taxes, allowing business owners to take standardized deductions that more closely resemble personal income taxes.

The Virginia senator also said that Clinton wants to make financing startups and small business expansions easier through community banks and credit unions.

The campaign's plan, according to Kaine, also promises to make health insurance more affordable for small businesses and provide incentives for local governments to ease the burdens of regulation when creating a new company.
