MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Divers pulled a man out of the Miami River in critical condition after crashing his minivan into the water.
Hours later, officials said 24-year-old Ciro A. Curra did not survive.
Witnesses said they saw the trapped driver banging on the window inside the vehicle as it sank into the water near N.W. 12th Avenue and 14th Street. No one else was inside.
"I seen the car going down and then somebody beating down on the window," said Thaine Humphrey. "I'm going, 'Oh Lord, let him get out.'"
"Last thing I saw was when the car was sinking, a person tried to come out from the car, from inside, tried to break the window," said Gary Chongqui.
Miami Fire Rescue were able to pull Curra out and transport him to Ryder Trauma Center in extremely critical condition. Paramedics were performing CPR along the way to the hospital.
Crews later removed the minivan from water.
Police haven't said what may have caused the accident but did not suspect foul play.
