Miami Gardens Man Shot 11 Times Headed To D.C. To Speak About Gun Violence

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A South Florida man is on his way to Washington, D.C. where he'll be talking to Congress about gun violence.

It was seven months ago that Antwan Reeves was shot in Miami Gardens 11 times.

"I'm just a branch of God's work, going to the nation's capital, speak to Congress so we can help build stiffer laws so guns won't be just so easy to access," said Reeves.

In late November, Reeves, his cousin, St. Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey, and Bailey's two children had gone to pick up another family member in Miami Gardens when a car pulled up and started shooting.

Miami Gardens police said the gunmen fired more than 30 rounds into their car at NW 199th Street and 38th Place.

"It's too easy to get guns now. It's way too easy and that's why so many murders and crimes are being committed," said Reeves.

Reeves is joining survivors and families of gun shooting victims, as well as Congresswoman Frederica Wilson and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, in that nation's capital Wednesday.

Democrats staged a sit-in on the House floor two weeks ago to push for legislation but so far no action has been taken.

Lawmakers plan to reiterate their call for House Speaker Paul Ryan to allow a vote on gun control measures that include stronger background checks and to keep those on the no-fly list from purchasing firearms.

"It's too easy.  It's like going to the store to buy candy, the same way you can get a gun and it shouldn't be that way," said Reeves.

The news conference takes place Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.

Reeves said the shooter has yet to be caught. Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crimes Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
