DAVIE (CBSMiami) – With the Fourth of July holiday just days away, authorities want to remind the public of the risks and potential dangers associated with fireworks.

The Broward Sheriff's Office held a demonstration Tuesday at the Broward Fire Academy at the cost of some very unlucky watermelons and mannequins.

"Whether you're watching a fireworks display or celebrating on the water, on the beach, barbecuing with friends and family - safety should be something that's part of your plan," said sheriff's spokesman Mike Jachles.

Broward Sheriff's Office wants families to remain vigilant, and practice caution while doing fireworks this Independence Day.

"While sparklers are legal, fireworks are not in the State of Florida. If it makes a boom, or if it takes off, that's a firework. Those are not legal for consumer use," said Jachles.

The bottom line, BSO says, is to leave the fireworks to the professionals.
