SUNRISE (CBSMiami) -- The Florida Panthers held a blood drive to help support those impacted by the deadly attack at an Orlando nightclub.

In conjunction with the City of Sunrise and non-profit OneBlood, the event took place Friday, June 17th, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

CBS4 News spoke to Susan Forbes, the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for One Blood, who told us since Sunday's attack, they've seen a 40-percent increase in first time donors.

"I lived in the Lake Mary area for six years or so and my heart just goes out to them," said Darlene Raymond. "I have O-negative blood so it's more universal for everybody and I just felt I could do my fair share."

The Florida Panthers Foundation will also accept donations in support of the OneOrlando Fund, created by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer in wake of the tragedy. Every dollar raised on Friday will be matched by the Florida Panthers Foundation.

"During this difficult time we felt it was important to unite and support the city of Orlando and everyone affected by this tragedy," Panthers Executive Chairman Peter Luukko said.

"To the families and friends of those murdered, our hearts ache. We know the survivors and their families have a long road ahead. The Sunrise family is ready to help and provide anything the Orlando family needs," said Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan.

The Miami-Dade Police Department also held a blood drive of their own. Officers there said although the tragedy happened in a different zip code, it's their responsibility to help out.

"The truth is that every two seconds in this country someone needs blood. So you're not just giving blood, you're not just donating blood, you're donating life," said Assistant Chief of Police Jorge Colina.
