Deputy Facing Child Sex Charges Dies In Hospital After Suicide Attempt

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- The Broward Sheriff's sergeant who shot himself after being released from jail on bond died at the hospital Wednesday night.

He left behind a suicide note and even called police to let them know where they could find his body.

Kreg Costa died at Broward Health Medical Center from injuries he sustained by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"He went to his house in Sunrise," said Broward Sheriff Scott Israel. "He had conversations with his wife. There came a point in time where she left to get some food and check on her children, who were staying at another place," Israel added.

Around 5:30 p.m., Costa then made a phone call to 911 that lasted just 10 seconds.

"Send Sunrise PD to the side yard," said Costa to the 911 operator.

"What's going on in the side yard," the operator asked.

The line then went dead.

Police arrived to Costa's home at the 9100-block of Sunset Strip in Sunrise to find him in the side yard, just as he said, and rushed him to Broward Health Medical Center.

He was pronounced dead about six hours later Wednesday night, June 15th.

Sheriff Israel said although this is sad and unfortunate, "One person is responsible for this and that's Kreg Costa."

Costa was arrested on June 9th.

According to court documents, he spent hours on his computer at his Weston office surfing porn sites and even enticing a 15-year-old girl in California to perform sex acts over a web cam.

Costa was facing 29 charges of child pornography and child molestation.

When Costa appeared before a judge on Friday, he was ordered to stay away from minors, including his own five children if unsupervised -- and forbidden access to the internet and firearms.

Police said Costa left behind a suicide note, but are not revealing what was in that note at this time.

Sunrise Police did confirm the weapon he shot himself with did belong to him.

The Broward Sheriff Office added that it was not his service weapon. That, along with his badge was surrendered at the time of his arrest.
