OAKLAND PARK (CBSMiami) – Walter Campos Cruz is accused of a disturbing crime.

He's charged with sneaking into a woman's Oakland Park apartment while she's slept and sexually assaulting her.

When she woke up, investigators said he kissed her neck.

"She was able to punch him in the left side of his face and scream for him to leave her home," said BSO Spokeswoman Joy Oglesby. "He then left and fled."

"I don't think he's going to be the guy," said Franklin Campos, Walter's brother.

He's stunned that his brother would be accused of something so awful, but said he has psychiatric and substance abuse issues.

"He's a drug addict but he was not using drugs for the last two weeks," Franklin Campos said. "We don't believe that he's going to be this kind of guy who try to abuse some woman."

When CBS4's Ted Scouten showed neighbors his picture, they knew exactly who he was, "That's him" yelled Angie Salcedo. "That's him!"

Neighbor said they see him often around the complex.

"He's always sitting in the stairway looking, he's always staring at people," Salcedo said. "That's him.  Wow!"

Investigators said it happened in the early morning hours of Monday, and that Campos may have gotten in through an unlocked back door.

Initially he told detectives he had nothing to do with it. However, he then admitted to breaking in and staring at the woman as she slept for up to 10 minutes, but never touched her.

Detectives want to know if he's done this before.

"Now that we do have him in custody we will be able to determine through finger printing and other details if he's suspected in similar crimes," Oglesby said.
