Bow-Tied, Colorful South Florida Bond Court Judge Moving On

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (CBSMiami/AP) — A South Florida judge known for his bow ties and down-to-earth personality is moving on after eight years in bond court.
Broward County Judge John "Jay" Hurley, who often wore a bow tie and bantered with a wide variety of defendants, estimates he presided over some 200,000 hearings in which defendants make their initial appearances and sometimes get bail. Hurley will now handle trials and other matters that are not necessarily streamed online. He is being replaced by Judge Michael Davis.
The SunSentinel reported Tuesday that among Hurley's notable cases were when he ordered a man accused of battery against his wife to buy her flowers, a birthday card, take her bowling and to dinner at her favorite restaurant, Red Lobster.
