MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- June 3 is National Doughnut Day, which means some of your favorite bakeries and coffee shops will be serving up some pretty sweet deals on the almight doughnut!
National Doughnut Day was originally established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. The women, called "Doughnut Lassies" served doughnuts to the troops on the front lines in France in order to provide them with some much-needed comfort food.
Now this comfort food is celebrated on the first Friday of June.
Here's where you can expect to find freebies and discounts this year:
Krispy Kreme: Customers will receive a free doughnut of their choice at participating locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Dunkin' Donuts: Get a free doughnut of your choice at shops worldwide with the purchase of any beverage.
Winn-Dixie: Get a free powdered doughnut holes at all in-store bakeries, while supplies last. There is a limit of one per guest, per store visit.
Cumberland Farms: Get one free doughnut with the purchase of a coffee or Chill Zone beverage from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Entenmann's Bakery: Entemann's Bakery has partnered with the Salvation Army in Broward County to give free doughnuts to commuters traveling eastbound on Broward Boulevard to downtown Fort Lauderdale. Starting at 8 a.m., the Community Corps Center (Broward Boulevard and Southwest Ninth Avenue) will give away frosted doughnuts. Entenmann's is also holding a Facebook sweepstakes to give away doughnuts for a year. For every entry received, Bimbo Bakeries USA, owner of Entenmann's, will donate $1 to the Salvation Army.
