MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A man who reportedly shot at a Miami Gardens police officer during a traffic stop faced a judge Monday.

It was a quick process for 37-year old Gary Sprauve who got no bond - meaning he will remain behind bars - charged with first degree attempted murder.

CBS4 was there exclusively when that man, identified as Sprauve, was taken from a hospital bed to a jail cell Sunday night. He was wearing a hospital gown and his hand was bandaged.

The shooting happened around 3 a.m. Sunday near 183rd Street and 12th Avenue.

The Miami Gardens officer's dash-cam footage shows a man in a black four-door sedan pull out a gun and open fire as the cop stood at the driver's side window.

Amazingly, the officer avoided a direct hit and fired back as the car sped off. Sprauve was struck in the hand from the gunfire.

"Somewhere during the traffic stop, the occupant of that vehicle discharged a firearm in the direction of the officer, striking his police car once," said Miami Gardens Police Chief Antonio Brooklen, noting that the suspect also had an additional firearm inside the vehicle and was wearing a bulletproof vest.

That led to a police pursuit and which ended at 191st Street and North Miami Avenue. Police stopped the car using spike strips and were able to take him into custody.

But what Sprauve had on him, has left police with a lot of questions.

"We're trying to verify where the bullet-proof vest came from.  What were his intentions of wearing that and having two firearms on his person," said Brooklen.

Police say Sprauve has a previous conviction for armed burglary in 2007.
