Hialeah Man Charged With 57 Counts Of Credit Card Fraud In Key Largo

KEY LARGO (CBSMiami) -- An alert Key Largo merchant's call to the police landed a Hialeah man in jail, charged with 60 felony counts related to credit card fraud.

Police said the manager of West Marine thought Rogelio Rodriguez, 41, was suspicious after attempting to use six credit cards that were all declined for the purchase of an expensive GPS system.

Rodriguez first produced a credit card and an Ohio driver's license of a man named Jesus Mardonado. When the card didn't go through, he tried five others, before walking out of the store empty-handed, according to an arrest report.

The suspicious activity prompted a call to the authorities and Rodriguez was soon stopped by Monroe County Sheriff's deputies along the highway near the 101 mile marker.

Police said they discovered "a stack of credit cards in his pocket" and found more counterfeit cards upon searching his vehicle. In total, he had 25 cards in his possession.

Rodriguez told officers he was a two-time convicted felon and declined to comment about the cards.

He was charged with 32 counts of using another person's identification without their permission; 25 counts of an illegal use of credit cards; grand theft, trafficking in counterfeited credit cards, manufacturing counterfeit identification and illegal use of a credit card.
