HIALEAH (CBSMiami) – The death of an 11 month old, left inside a family van, prompted an investigation by Hialeah Police.

As of Tuesday, no one was in custody or charged in the death of the baby girl the day before.

Hialeah Police said the investigation was just beginning and said detectives are working closely with the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office.

CBS4's Peter D'Oench spoke with neighbors who live right next to the home where the girl was discovered at 3517 W 86th Terrace near I-75.  They said they found this story deeply troubling and heart wrenching.

"It's bad," said neighbor Edgar Mujica. "I am very emotional. I don't know. It is difficult."

"I have a lot of relatives and some are small children. This is weird when this happens so close to many home. This is terrible and really sad. Someone said that this person didn't forget his phone but he forgot about his child," said another neighbor, Victor Fuenmayor.

"This is terrible," he added. "I don't see a reason for it, to leave your child. I just don't know. It's pretty devastating I guess.'

Authorities said someone called 911 to report the child in the car sometime around 4 p.m. Monday.

Crews took the baby to Palmetto Hospital where she was declared dead.

While police don't know exactly how long the baby was in the van, they believe it could have been a few hours.

It remains unclear where the parents were while she was left unattended in the car.

Authorities have not released the name of the baby or her parents.
