Delray Beach Brewery Uses Edible Ring Six-Packs Safe For Animals To Eat

DELRAY BEACH (CBSMiami) -- An estimated eight million tons of plastic end up in our oceans each year and that number is expected to double within the decade.

Researchers say some of the trash sinks and some of it floats, but all of it is posing a threat to wild life. Just this week, a humpback whale off the Massachusetts coast was entangled so badly in rope and fishing line that rescuers said removing all of it would be potentially lethal because the animal's tissue had grown around it.

One south Florida company has decided to take responsibility and make a statement that the rest of the industry could follow.

Saltwater Brewery, located in Delray Beach, is using an edible ring to hold their six-packs of beer together that would feed animals rather than kill them if it ends up being littered.

The company says the rings are made from the byproducts of the beer-making process and are 100% biodegradable and compostable.
