MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A student accused of slashing another during a fight at a Hialeah high school will remain behind bars.

The 15-year old stood before a judge Wednesday - without his parents in the courtroom - saying he lives with his mother but wasn't sure if she knew he was in custody.

The judge later ruled he would remain in secure detention pending a hearing on June 7th to determine if he will be tried as an adult.

In court Wednesday, the teen's attorney characterized the incident this way, "two juveniles perhaps making decision that weren't the smartest but making them mutually."

The day before, authorities arrested him after they say he pulled out a small knife during a fight at Westland Hialeah High School and cut Giovanni Pavon - an 18-year old senior - in the chest and arm.

The two got into an altercation in the cafeteria bathroom which escalated and moved to the lunchroom.

Some students were alarmed.

"He stabbed him with this little thing. It was crazy," said a student.

Pavon was taken to Palmetto Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Meantime, the 15-year old is facing an aggravated battery charge and is under strict rules by Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Angelica Zayas until his next hearing.

"No contact whatsoever with the alleged victim in this case, direct or indirect, not through social media, through friends, through messages through friends, messages through family," said Judge Zayas.
