HIALEAH (CBSMiami) — A student is in custody following a slashing at a Hialeah high school Tuesday.

School district officials said two boys – a 15-year old freshman and an 18-year old senior – got into an altercation in a bathroom at Westland Hialeah High School just before 12 p.m.

At some point, the altercation escalated and moved to a cafeteria lunchroom.

“All I saw was one kid attacking the other and the other one trying to defend himself,” said witness Estrella Gonzalez.

At one point, the freshman reportedly took out a small knife and cut the senior in the chest and arm. He was taken to Palmetto Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

While the district won’t confirm the name of the 18-year old, friends said his name is Giovanni Pavon.

The freshman was taken to the juvenile detention center and is now facing an aggravated battery charge.

Parents got a not very detailed message on their phones that there had been an incident. Any Terrero was worried enough to drive to the school.

“I said what happened and no one was answering,” said Terrero.

Students said us while there have been some fights this school year, nothing was as aggressive as Tuesday’s fight.

“I think they should have metal detectors,” said a student.
