Watch Out For Unhealthy "Healthy" Foods

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - If you check out the labels in your local super market, you'll find a number of products with the terms "fat-free" and "heart healthy" on them.

But registered dietitians say don't believe everything you read. There are many foods on the shelf that you may think are good for you but really are not. That's because when the foods cut out the fat, experts say they add more sugar and salt.

The unhealthy foods include fat-free flavored coffee creamer, certain yogurts, breakfast bars, muffins, low-fat processed foods, artificial sweeteners, and foods with added fiber.

For example, if you're looking to cut calories, you may want to think twice before reaching for the diet soda. Dietitian Lindsay Malone with the Cleveland Clinic says diet drinks are loaded with artificial sweeteners that are sweeter than sugar.

"So when you do have something that is a little bit sweet, like a brownie, it's not going to do it for you cause you're used to this ultra sweet sensation," said Malone.

Vanilla yogurt is another food that can be deceptive.

"Compare it with ice cream, you're going to find the sugar content somewhat the same," said Malone.

While breakfast bars sound like a healthy option, there's a catch.

"It's not going to take you very far in your day," said Malone.

And if you think a muffin with fruit or fiber is better choice.

"It's a cupcake without frosting," said Malone. "They often have more oil, sugar and calories than a donut."

Malone said if you're trying to eat healthy, start your day with fruit or a high fiber unsweetened cereal. She adds the healthiest foods come without a label, so it's a good idea to cut back on the processed foods where you can.
