MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Donald Trump's possible nomination may mean a break between Miami-Dade County's influential Cuban-American voters and the Republican Party, according to a new poll.

According to the poll shared with our news partners at the Miami Herald, Cuban Americans in South Florida dislike Trump so much that his likely presidential nomination may shift them away from the GOP.

In the poll, 37 percent supported Trump. The man who conducted the poll, Dario Moreno, a Florida International University Associate Professor, told the paper this is "the lowest in history that any potential Republican candidate polls among this traditionally loyal demographic."

He added that this may give Hillary Clinton the chance of winning the influential voting demographic.

Moreno said the group has been realigning since 2004 with younger voters of Cuban descent and Cuban immigrants opting to identify themselves as Democrats or independents.

"With Trump, the real danger is that he's going to accelerate this realignment in Miami," Moreno told the paper.

Moreno acknowledged his own biased against Trump saying he won't vote for Trump but also said that he would not vote for Clinton.

According to the poll, about 10 percent said they wouldn't vote at all if Trump wins the Republican nomination. That's when respondents were asked an open-ended question.
