MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The month of May is the national month to remember the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers.

In 2011, the Police Officer Assistance Trust began the Project Hero Every Resting Officer (HERO) to honor officers who died in the line of duty where they are laid to rest.

Over the last five years, police departments across the country honor their fallen officers by placing a United States flag and an Eternal Blue Line flag at each grave or crypt. Grave markers, labeled Police Officer and in the shape of police badges, proudly held the flags in place.

A total of 1,439 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty during the past 10 years, an average of one death every 61 hours or 144 per year

On Friday, the Miami-Dade Police Department honored their fallen officers. CBS4 photographer Ralph Murciano traveled with them and filed the following video essay.
