South Dade Principal Struck By SUV Now "Stable"

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A South Florida principal was critically injured after he was struck by an out-of-control driver at Tamiami Park.

Javier Perez, 43, principal at South Dade Senior High School, was at the park Tuesday evening to help coach his son's baseball game.

Around 6:20 p.m., Marilyn Aguilera, 51, was behind the wheel of a GMC Envoy when she lost control near the batting cages, crashed through a fence and onto a field, police said.

Perez, who was standing by first base, was struck and pinned under the vehicle.

He was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center.

"He is in critical but stable condition. The prognosis appears to be rather positive. This is a strong individual, who is much beloved," said Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.

Aguilera has a history of at least 14 traffic citations, the majority for driving with a suspended license or without proof of insurance.

"No citations have been issued and she has not been arrested at this time but it is under investigation," said Miami-Dade Police Det. Robin Pinkard.

Extra counselors were on hand to talk with students and staff members about the tragic accident.

"That's our principal, that's the head of our school. Nobody wants to hear that happen to their leader. He's a great guy," said student Michael Hodge.

Provided Perez pulls through, he faces a long and difficult recovery. A temporary principal will be appointed to the school in the interim.
