MIAMI (CBSMiami) – It's history in the making at Miami Jackson Senior High.

Their football team kicked off spring practice with new head coach Lakatriona "Kay Kay" Brunson.

Brunson is the first female high school head football coach in the history of Florida.

She wasted no time getting her new team amped up.

"My style is smash-mouth football. We wanna hit, and we wanna hit hard. Once we knock our first punch out there, everybody will fall back on their heels. We ready to go," she said.

Brunson's hiring back in February made big headlines.

If she looks familiar it's maybe because you've seen her on the reality show "South Beach Tow."

But she does have an athletic background.

She is an alumnus of Northwestern, where she was a member of the track and field team – shot put and discus thrower – as well as playing basketball for the Bulls.

Brunson then went to college at Tennessee State University, where she played basketball and later played football for the Miami Fury in the Independent Women's Football League.

Brunson is a full-time physical education teacher at Jackson, as well as serving as an assistant coach on the basketball team and serving as the head coach of Jackson's flag football team – an FHSAA sanctioned all-girl sport.

Rapper Luther "Uncle Luke" Campbell is her assistant head coach.

They hope to turn around a team that went 3-6 last year.
