Questions Surround Car In Canal Mystery

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- Questions surround a mysterious accident that left a car at the bottom of a canal in Ft. Lauderdale and a driver somehow in the hospital.

At a small park along the 800 block of N.W. 27th Avenue, investigators are working to determine just how the car ended up in the water.

There is no sharp turn on the road and no tire tracks in the grass.

And just how did the driver end up in the hospital?

The Broward Sheriff's Office was called out to the scene early Friday morning to find the lights of the black Chrysler 300 still shining underwater.

Divers were dispatched as onlookers gathered to see what was going on. As the hours passed, more and more people began showing up, frazzled, upset and in tears -- their fears made reality.

Police said Danny Herrington had been behind the wheel the night before.

His father said he was last seen at a nightclub around 1:00 a.m. but hadn't been answering his phone since.

"Somebody say his car was found in the canal. That's how I end up here," said Earl Vines, Herrington's father.

His mother arrived at the scene just moments after the car was pulled from the canal. In disbelief, it took several people to hold her back from rushing the scene.

But suddenly, good news -- the man who was thought to be in the car was discovered to be alive.

"We just got a phone call, he is in Florida Medical," said Vines.

Investigators are now trying to piece the events together to determine just what happened and how Herrington made it out of the vehicle and to the hospital.

Those who knew and loved him are now breathing a sigh of relief.

"We're just relieved that he is okay," said Vines.
